Plan the Perfect Picnic

Summer is finally HERE and we can’t get enough of the outdoors. Whether you’re still social distancing or just enjoying the warm weather, a picnic is the perfect outdoor activity to spend time with friends or family. There is nothing more “summer” than a fun picnic at the park, or near a beach/lake on those super hot days. We’re putting a list together of some of our picnic essentials to make your day fun and exciting.

Hand Wipes and Sanitizer

This key item is our number one must-have for your picnic. Make sure you’re stocked with hand sanitizer or wipes for your picnic day out. This is one product that you can never have enough of! Liquid sanitizer is great to use right before eating and wipes are ideal for kiddos who like to play. For post-eating, sticky hands try the Mum and You New 100% Biodegradable Baby Wipes. These wipes are completely biodegradable and are fragrance free—making them great options for hand and face cleanups.

The Spread

One of the most important things is your picnic spread! You can approach this multiple ways: pre-made food, prep your own meals at home or even a fancy charcuterie—the key here is portability. Make sure that whatever you bring travels easily and won’t spoil after sitting in the sun. One fun idea is to have everyone bring various cheeses, crackers, fruits and wine to indulge in. Other great accompaniments to charcuterie are jams and honey. We love this Beekeeper's Naturals 100% Raw Honey Sampler Set Gift Box - it features a smaller-sized sampler of their honey offerings and is a wonderful picnic addition.

Reusable Tableware

Our motto is “leave the world better than you found it.” To keep waste and trash to a minimum, consider bringing reusable utensils, plates and cloth napkins. We’re loving the reusable bags from Compostic which are 100% home compostable and zero waste. These bags have the benefit of being stronger than plastic and are much better for the environment. Compostic bags are non-toxic and free of GMOs, traditional plastics and BPA. Also don’t forget to bring a garbage bag to collect everything you want to throw out!

Portable Picnic

Toting your picnic spread is much more fun with a picnic basket. But if you’re not ready to make that investment, a cooler and reusable totes will work just as well. Keep items that need to be refrigerated in a cooler along with beverages. Reusable ice packs are a great choice to keep things cool without the mess of ice melting and potentially leaking. And when it comes to blankets, there are some fancy outdoor blanket options, but beach towels work too! Pro tip: the Ethique Flash! Laundry Bar & Stain Stick is great for washing out grass and dirt stains from picnic blankets and towels.

SPF and Bug Repellant

Of course you can’t have an outdoor picnic without SPF! We like to reference the American Association of Dermatology which recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen that has a SPF of 30 or higher and is water resistant. Make sure to bring it with you so you can reapply throughout the day. Another essential to bring is bug repellant. No one wants these uninvited visitors so be sure to have some bug spray on hand if the insects overstay their welcome. An easy DIY bug repellant recipe includes citronella oil, witch hazel and water. Place your mixture in a spray bottle for the most effective way to disperse.

We hope these essentials make it easy for your to plan your next picnic! Enjoy the weather and time with friends and family outdoors!
