Our 5 Favorite Personal Care Essentials for your Long-Weekend

The summer season is officially kicks off with the Memorial Day long weekend and this May is looking a whole lot brighter than last year. To make things even more exciting, Splashe is offering 20% off your entire order all weekend, when entering code MDW2021 at checkout! With so much to look forward to this year, it’s impossible not to be excited for this summer. So whether you’re staying local or heading on a much-needed getaway, here are some of our recommendations for long-weekend personal care essentials!

  1. Hand Sanitizer

While we’re not completely out of the woods with COVID, antibacterial products are still a must-have. Wipes are great if you’re looking to disinfect more than just your hands! Recess Hand Sanitizing Wipes are able to kill 99.9% of germs while leaving hands moisturized and soft. Formulated with aloe to help calm and nourish skin, and lavender which naturally fights bacteria and contains anti-inflammatory properties. And of course, there is the classic antibacterial hand sanitizing liquid like Completely Bare Completely Clean Hand Sanitizer. It’s probably safe to say that hand sanitizer is going to be a big part of our everyday essentials from now on and liquid hand sanitizer is perfect for travelling or on-the-go use.

  1. Sun Protection

There’s never been a bigger push for sun care than in the past few years. Sun care brands are really changing the conversation and educating consumers about why it’s so important to wear sunscreen. The American Association of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that has a SPF of 30 or higher and is water resistant. Another aspect to consider is mineral vs. chemical sunscreen. Here’s a quick break down of the two sunscreen types.

  • Mineral Sunscreens - Ingredients form a barrier on the surface of the skin that helps reflect UV rays away from the skin. Active ingredients in a mineral sunscreen are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
  • Chemical Sunscreens - Ingredients penetrate the top layers of the skin to absorb damaging UV rays before they can harm your skin. Ingredients include Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Homosalate and Octinoxate.

Mineral sunscreen is the original sun protection (think 1950s, cute lifeguard with zinc on the nose), however it’s coming back into popularity because it is “reef safe.” Ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate in chemical sunscreens have been linked to coral bleaching which is devastating to our environment. On a brighter note, there are some chemical sunscreens that are reef safe. Whether you’re by the pool or sitting under an umbrella, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!

  1. Skincare

As the weather gets warmer, its sometimes necessary to adjust your skincare routine. We’re fans of the trendy ingredient: jojoba oil. We’re not saying it’s a miracle worker but this ingredient really can do it all. It’s hydrating, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic and that’s just the beginning! Its skincare benefits include controlling sebum production, promoting collagen synthesis, treating acne and helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Jojoba oil is so multi-faceted because it’s organic makeup is similar to the sebum our skin produces. It’s gentle enough to be used on its own or as a carrier oil to mix with other essential oils. Jojoba oil is the perfect summer skincare ingredient. We’re currently loving the Jojoba Travel Essentials Kit which comes with five convenient travel sized products and everything you need for complete day and night skincare routine. This pack is the perfect companion to ensure your skin is nourished and healthy, no matter where you are.

  1. Feminine Products

When it comes to your period, the motto is “always be prepared.” With so many new feminine hygiene products on the market it can be hard to find ones that work best for you and your lifestyle. If you’re concerned about what you’re putting into your body we have some great recommendations for eco-friendly feminine care. Flo uses organic bamboo, certified organic cotton and biodegradable + compostable materials. Their products offer superior leak protection and are free-from chemical residues, dyes, pesticides, chlorine bleach or fragrances.
